Quality Box, Maroquin And Brass Case, Europe, Directoire Period Or Earlier

Rectangular in shape with a domed lid, this is a very attractive box or case for storing a specific item. The wooden core is covered in an elegant camel-colored morocco. Resting on 4 small feet, it is fit with a brass handle and hooks. The base of the handle is decorated with stylized flowers. Free-form brass keyhole and spandrels protect the lower corners. The top corners are decorated with tapestry nails. The inside of the lid and the inner edges are lined with chamois and leather. The mark left on the inside of the lid suggests an item with cylindrical border , such as a graphometer or religious object (ciborium, chalice...). Bottom is adorned with brown paper looking like leather. 
Good overall condition: one upholsterer's nail is missing from the back of the lid. Missing lock and key. Minor wear to the morocco; I have noted the two most important, which are not serious. Please look carefully at my detailed photos, I'm not hiding anything!
