Gouache on paper - Animated pastoral landscape
French schoolFrench, late 18th century
Entourageby Jean-Baptiste Pillement

This delicate gouache on paper follows in the traditiontradition of 18th-century pastoral landscapes, and can be traced back to thethe entourage of Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808), a major figure in EuropeanEuropean ornamental landscape.

The composition features a bucolic scene typical of thelate Rococo taste: a path winding through abundant vegetation, slender trees with wispy foliage, and a solitary figure in the foreground, invitingin the foreground, inviting contemplation. In the background, a river andand a gently rolling horizon open up the perspective, in a soft, luminousatmosphere. The overall effect is one of harmony and idealized natureof harmony and idealized nature, characteristic of 18th-century inventive landscapes.

The treatment of foliage, the supple lines,as well as the subtle palette of greens, blues and ochres, directly evoke the aestheticthe aesthetic developed by Pillement and his followers. The gouache techniquegouache, prized for its finesse of execution and decorative qualities, was widelywidely used for this type of scene, intended for aristocratic and bourgeoisbourgeois clientele.

Traveling painter, Jean-Baptiste Pillement left his mark on his erathe spread of an instantly recognizable style, blending French, Italian andFrench, Italian and sometimes Chinese influences (in his famouschinoiseries). Trained in the rococo tradition, he worked in Paris, thenLondon, Lisbon, Vienna and Warsaw, contributing to the spread ofornamental landscape throughout Europe. His work isfree compositions, imaginary factories, stylized and poetic nature, oftenstylized and poetic nature, often populated by small characters.

The work presented here bears witness to this influence and can be attributed toan artist from his circle or to a close follower, active at the end of the 18thcentury or in the early years of the 19th century. It perfectly illustratesthe taste for decorative landscapes, both elegant and evocative, that wereon the eve of neoclassicism.
