This delicate gouache on paper follows in the traditiontradition of 18th-century pastoral landscapes, and can be traced back to thethe entourage of Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808), a major figure in EuropeanEuropean ornamental landscape.

The composition features a bucolic scene typical of thelate Rococo taste: a path winding through abundant vegetation,slender trees with wispy foliage, and a solitary figure in the foreground, invitingin the foreground, inviting contemplation. In the background, a river andand a gently rolling horizon open up the perspective, in a soft, luminousatmosphere.
