Antonio Fontanesi was born in 1818 in Reggio Emilia, where he studied painting at the School of Fine Arts.
Thanks to various trips to Geneva, Paris and London, he came into contact with many artists and specialized in landscape painting. He taught at the Accademia in Lucca and the Accademia Albertina in Turin, which he left in 1869 to teach for two years at the Tokyo Academy . He died in Turin in 1882. Most of his works are preserved at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Turin and at the Musei Civici in Reggio Emilia.
