Pitcher With Solid Silver Lid - Germany (hanau) - 19th Century
Elegant solid silver cylindrical pitcher richly worked in repoussé, decorated with drop-shaped motifs and stylized foliage. The body rests on a molded pedestal and features relief decoration characteristic of Hanau historicist production.
The hinged lid is topped by a small figure in the round, adding a decorative and narrative dimension to the whole. The finely chased handle ends in an expressive mascaron in high relief. The pouring spout is well marked, giving the object a utilitarian as well as ornamental function.
The interior is entirely vermeiled (gilded silver), a common practice to protect the metal and emphasize the precious character of the piece.
The set bears pseudo-punches, typical of Hanau workshops in the 19th century, imitating older marks without corresponding to an official system.
