Marquetry Jewelry Box, Butterfly Design, Circa 1900.
Elegant jewelry box circa 1900, demonstrating very fine cabinetmaking, both in the choice of materials and in the decorative composition.
The frame, in oak, is fully veneered on all four sides and on the lid with beautiful elm burr, finely selected for its fine, even grain.
The whole is framed by violet wood, arranged askew, and underlined by fillets of black-stained wood and boxwood, structuring and giving rhythm to the architecture of the case.
The lid features a particularly meticulous marquetry decoration, structured around a central oval medallion whose ebony veneer background highlights a large butterfly with outstretched wings. The motif is created using a variety of woods, including sycamore maple and stained woods - particularly green - for a nuanced, precise rendering.
At the corners, four quarter-circle spandrels each house a smaller butterfly, interacting with the central motif and balancing the composition.
The whole is framed by a neoclassical frieze, with a ribbon motif wrapped around a rush. This decoration, treated in sycamore and elm on an ebony background, runs all around the lid and is connected at the corners by four mother-of-pearl cabochons, providing a discreet luminous punctuation.
Ebony is also used to frame the lid in the form of a quarter-round, structuring and softening the overall design.
The medallion-shaped keyhole is made of solid ebony.
The interior, in oak, is arranged in three compartments, in keeping with its use as a jewelry box. The lid is fitted with a small recessed mirror. The hinges and lock are original (key missing).
The box has been cleaned, glued and varnished, restoring the legibility of the decoration and highlighting the rich colors and veining of the veneers.
The set is in very good condition.
