Pair Of Neoclassical Sconces With Attributes Of Love, In Gilt Bronze, Louis XVI Period.
Beautiful pair of Louis XVI-period two-light sconces in finely chased and gilded bronze, featuring a rich, structured and particularly meticulous neoclassical décor.
Each sconce is organized around a central sheathed shaft, adorned at its base with water leaves, from which emerge acanthus leaf bases rising from filleted flutes, a motif characteristic of the decorative vocabulary of the period.
On either side are the two elegantly curved arms of light, adorned with acanthus leaf scrolls and ending in finely chased cups and bobeches, adorned with rows of pearls, laurel leaves and canals.
The central shaft is enriched, at its center, with applique decoration featuring the attributes of Love - bow, quiver furnished with arrows and torch - joined by a ribboned bow, surmounted by knotted laurel leaf sprigs.
A motif inherited from Antiquity, where the bow, arrow and quiver were symbols of power and sovereignty, this repertoire is here transposed in the neoclassical taste in a softened, decorative form, associated with the sentimental themes dear to the late 18th century.
The upper part is crowned by an antique-style fire pot, adorned with draped ribbons, topped by a stylized flame, an emblematic element of Louis XVI decorative language.
The base of the sconces is treated with acanthus leaves and berries, coherently echoing the entire ornamental vocabulary.
The chasing is of the highest quality, particularly evident in the finesse of the foliage, the clarity of the moldings and the precision of the decorative elements.
The original gilding shows an old patina with a lot of wear, nevertheless preserving beautiful luminous passages.
The sconces were formerly electrified, with piercing of the cups, and retain their old structure.
Thanks to their generous dimensions (48 cm high) and the richness of their decoration, these sconces are part of the careful decorative production of the Louis XVI period.
