Philippe Gautier is a French artist born in 1928. His style, described as "transfigurative", explores the border between figuration and abstraction. He envelops his subjects (female figures, still lifes or seascapes) in a vibrant aura, far beyond simple realistic representation. His nuanced palette, composed of delicate superimpositions, generates an almost tactile emotion; his compositions seem animated, like "moving masses emerging from the canvas".

Philippe Gautier, born in Fresnay-sur-Sarthe in 1928, entered the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Jean Dupas' studio in 1948, then Raymond Legueult's in 1952. In 1951, he exhibited his first works. Initially inspired by Corot, he evolved towards a cubist style and eventually created his own highly structured, colorful style.
