Artist: Charles Malfroy

by Charles Malfroy (Lyon, May 27, 1862 - Le Kremlin-Bicêtre, July 21, 1939),
oil on canvas mounted on keyed stretcher,
33.5 cm x 55 cm,
signed and dated and located lower right Malfroy 1914 Martigues.
(canvas slightly relaxed / its varnish / small misses at the edge of the canvas hidden by the frame)

Talented colorist, Charles Malfroy excelled in producing views of the Côte d'Azur and Venice, in the execution of seascapes, Mediterranean ports and more particularly that of Martigues.
In this work, the sun is at its zenith, at the end of a peaceful fishing morning.
The boats are in and moored, not all of them untied, the fishermen mostly busy on the quays...The artist was 52 when he painted this charming view of Martigues.
He perfectly masters his Art, where we notice his color work, the accuracy of his touch, but above all the angle of view of his composition, divided into three successive scenes, to best convey to us the atmosphere of this moment in the heart of this charming fishing port.
