French Dress In Blue Edged Taffeta Nattier - France Circa 1780
Circa 1780
France
French-style dress in Nattier blue brocaded edged taffeta and composed of a coat and skirt, typical of the French art of dress under Louis XVI circa 1780. Dress coat with Watteau pleats in the back, open at the front to leave room for a stomach piece and small three-quarter pagoda sleeves with two ruffles. Very fine Nattier blue silk taffeta with garlands of river flowers. Falbalas undulating, bubbled, pleated and crenellated, notably on the sleeves, on the front of the coat and on the skirt with four rows of ruffles. Original ecru linen lining on the bodice, with the rest of the coat partially lined in absinthe green silk taffeta and cream chintz. The skirt waistband was altered in the 20th century to allow reuse. Note the consolidation of the taffeta by a professional workshop, notably at the shoulders and bottom of the train, as well as the very slight fragility of the silk, which does not call into question its stability and presentation. Good overall condition. The rigid white whalebone body is not part of this sale.
Dimensions: Mannequined on size 36 France. Coat height 140 cm, back height 165 cm, shoulders 39 cm, sleeves 42 cm, chest 90 cm, waist 75 cm, coat circumference 300 cm approx.
