Medieval Germanic Maigelein Glass - Late 15th Century, High Period, Gothic, Middle Ages
Germanic medieval maigelein glass - late 15th century, high period, Gothic, Middle Ages
Exceptional and rare medieval blown glass goblet, known as a maigelein, typical of the Germanic area at the end of the 15th century.
These small drinking cups were intended for the consumption of wine or spirits. Each piece was fashioned using a traditional technique: the glassmaker rolled the glowing gob against an ornate surface, imprinting characteristic relief patterns. These asperities had a dual function, both aesthetic and practical, ensuring an excellent grip.
The underside features a central recess for holding the glass with the finger, a functional detail emblematic of this type of production.
The example on offer is distinguished by the quality of its glass, with a beautiful bluish-green tint, luminous and brilliant, animated by numerous bubbles testifying to old-fashioned manufacture. Trace of pontil visible under the base.
Given their great fragility, very few maigelein have come down to us intact, making this piece of particular interest to collectors.
To note: an old restoration on one side.
Provenance: prestigious Austrian collection.
