In 1959, Jerusalem's Hadassah medical center commissioned Marc Chagall, then celebrated for more than a decade after his return from emigration to France with numerous exhibitions, to create a set of twelve stained glass windows dedicated to the twelve tribes of Israel for its synagogue under construction.
Thanks to close collaboration with master glassmakers Charles and Brigitte Marq of the illustrious Simon workshop in Reims, founded in the 16th century, the artist embarked on this large-scale project, inaugurated in 1962. Five preliminary stages were necessary to bring to life the preparatory models on small- and medium-format paper, in pencil, Indian ink, watercolor, gouache and collage of fabric and paper. Each technique and stage enables the painter not only to place iconographic elements according to his personal reading of the biblical text, but also to tame the density and movement of materials and colors, in conjugation with the transparency of light after their monumental transposition onto glass.
This pictorial cycle created in complicity with matter and light thus brings forms and colors to life on porcelain.
