Richard Sapper Office Chair, Knoll International Edition, Leather And Glides, Circa 1979
■ PRESENTATION OF THE WORKGalerie Les Merciers is offering for purchase this elegant modernist office chair, designed by German industrial designer Richard Sapper (1932-2015) for Knoll International. Sapper, whose work focused on technical complexity and purity of line (awarded ten Compasso d'Oro awards), delivered with this 1979 series a masterful reflection on ergonomics in the workplace. This offer concerns a single chair, a second identical copy is available.
■ ANALYSIS AND MATERIALSThis piece is distinguished by its specific "conference" or "visitor" configuration: the five-star cruciform base rests on wide, circular black metal glides, giving the whole a large, architectural "lounge" type seating. The base bears the original Knoll International label. The seat and backrest are upholstered in top-quality black leather, structured by horizontal stitching. The armrests are in black grained plastic. The seat features precision mechanics: central swivel, altimetric adjustment (50 to 54 cm) and double-lever tilt adjustment.
■ STATUS REPORTPrice is for one chair. This seat is in excellent original condition and mechanical working order. The leather has retained all its suppleness and matte finish, showing a very slight patina of use that guarantees its authenticity. The metal structures are sound.
