Taraxacum Pendant Light, Castiglioni For Flos, Circa 1960

Artist: Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni
■ PRESENTATION OF THE WORK
The Les Merciers gallery, specializing in 20th-century furniture and objets d'art, is privileged to present a museum-quality piece of Italian design: the imposing "Taraxacum" pendant lamp. Designed by the brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni – whose works are part of the permanent collections of major institutions such as the MoMA in New York – this creation was produced by the Flos factory in the early 1960s.

■ HISTORICAL AND TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
This work reflects the experimental approach of the Castiglioni brothers, who constantly sought to combine formal paradox with technological innovation. The Taraxacum model is distinguished by its use of a revolutionary manufacturing technique for the time, imported from the United States and perfected by Italian designers: the "cocoon" technique. The process involves spraying a synthetic polymer resin directly onto a complex three-dimensional steel wire structure. As it solidifies, the resin tightens, creating a continuous membrane with a matte, velvety texture. The result is an organic form, both geometric and sinuous, which offers a remarkable sculptural appearance, even when the light is off. When illuminated, the resin diffuses a diaphanous, soft, and warm light.

■ CONDITION REPORT
Finding a Taraxacum model of this size and period in such excellent condition is exceptional. The piece is in remarkable vintage condition. The resin membrane shows no tears or structural damage. The surface has naturally evolved over time to develop a superb and luxurious uniform beige patina, guaranteeing its authenticity and age. The electrical system has been fully overhauled and tested. The pendant light is wired to be compatible with European and American standards (standard socket for an E26/E27 bulb).

Sphere diameter: 66 cm
