C . Topino, Stamped Table, 1770.
Artist: Charles Topino (1735-1803)
Superb Transition period "chiffonnière" flying table, inlaid on all sides, stamped by cabinetmaker Charles TOPINO (1735-1803) and hallmarked by the Jurande des Menuisiers Ébénistes (JME).
Perfectly illustrating the Transition period, when the fantasy of Louis XV curves gradually gave way to a new neoclassical geometric rigor, this table features a spectacular trompe-l'oeil "jeu de fond" marquetry. The "cube" motif is executed with millimetric precision, using a contrast of rosewood and sycamore to simulate relief, and framed by wide fillets of violet wood laid in cross grain. Each face, including the top and the spacer shelf, is treated with the same visual rigor.
The quadrangular case opens on the front with three drawers (one with compartments), over which the marquetry decoration of unfolds continuously.
It stands on four slender curved legs adorned with gilt bronze sabots with acanthus leaf motifs.
The top is encircled by a veneered moulding with a slight protrusion, characteristic of the most sophisticated productions of this period.
This beautiful piece of furniture is in a perfect state of preservation, with use and maintenance restoration (traditional buffer varnish).
It is stamped C.TOPINO, accompanied by the JME hallmark. Transitional period, circa 1770.
Charles TOPINO (1735-1803), Maître in 1773, was one of the most original masters of his time. Based on rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, he specialized in "meubles de fantaisie" and small flying tables. His mastery of intricate marquetry - whether with Chinese-style utensil decorations or geometrical ones, as shown here - enabled him to supply the capital's leading merchant-mongers.
Dimensions:
Height 72 cm
Width 45.5 cm
Depth 36.5 cm
