Charming genre scene depicting a young violinist accompanied by his father, also a musician, in a village or tavern setting.

At the center of the composition, a child dressed in a green habit plays the violin with application. Behind him stands a man in a broad black hat, with an expressive, benevolent face, also holding a violin, suggesting a scene of musical apprenticeship or transmission. Beside them, a third figure observes the scene attentively, reinforcing the intimate, narrative character of the whole.

The set opens onto an architectural and tree-lined background treated with sobriety, leaving all the room for the group of figures. The warm palette, dominated by brown, red and green tones, as well as the chiaroscuro, contribute to creating a warm, lively atmosphere.

This work is a late 18th-century revival based on a model by Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (1712-1774).

An active painter in Dresden, Dietrich was noted for his many compositions inspired by 17th-century Flemish masters, notably Adriaen Brouwer and Adriaen van Ostade. He particularly developed scenes of musicians and popular figures, which were widely circulated and repeated

The present composition takes up the essential characteristics:

- close-up, expressive figures
- popular musical subject matter
- narrative dimension (father-child transmission)
- intimate atmosphere inherited from Flemish tradition

A counterpart to this work (same type of subject, same size, same frame), is also offered for sale
In case of sale as a pair the total price is €450, i.e. €50 off the individual price

Good overall presentation condition.Cracks, wear and old restorations in keeping with age.

Works after Dietrich met with great success in the late 18th century, particularly when they featured musical and family subjects. This painting captivates by the quality of its observation, its lively character and its strong decorative power.
