Characters in the foreground can be seen: gondoliers, fishermen, Venetians and the Doge's Palace. The scene is treated on a strong sepia-toned paper, in Indian ink.
It is framed in a gilded wooden frame (probably original). André Maire (1898-1984) was a French artist renowned for his drawings. A travel painter, he was in Italy and Venice from 1921. He traveled the world, Asia, Europe (resident at the Casa Velazquez in 1932/ 1933); Africa, Grand Prix de l'AOF in 1946.
