Signature placed on a marble fragment in the lower left foreground, "HR" monogram on the figure's drawing board and "Hubert Robert" cartouche on the frame.

A major painter of the 18th century, Hubert Robert, nicknamed "Robert of Ruins", is renowned for his architectural whims inspired by Antiquity and his sojourns in Italy. His work, a blend of imagination and observation, had a lasting influence on the taste for ruin landscapes.
