19th Century Japanese Ishō-dansu In Two Superimposed Chests, Japanese Clothes Chest

This large ishō-dansu, Japanese tansu intended for clothing storage, features a sober, powerful architecture characteristic of fine-quality utilitarian furniture of the late Edo period. The piece is formed by two superimposed chests, in a modular design that once facilitated transport and domestic use, while giving the whole a very balanced presence.

.

The facade is enlivened by spectacular graining, with wide, deep waves that give the wood an almost painterly vibration. This rich natural pattern contrasts with the rigor of the construction. Four large drawers take up the bulk of the composition: two high drawers in the upper section, then one large drawer and one lower drawer in the lower section. To the right, a small compartment closed by a door uncovers two interior drawers, a layout characteristic of storage tansu designed to organize linen and personal effects.

.

The dark metal fittings structure the facade without weighing it down. Large circular keyways, mobile pull handles and corner spandrels reinforce the furniture's character while recalling its practical function. They also introduce a very Japanese decorative rhythm, based less on gratuitous ornament than on the harmony between use, material and design.

The ishō-dansu belongs to the great tradition of Japanese storage furniture developed between the Edo period and the 19th century. Unlike Western furniture, these tansu were designed to meet concrete needs for storage, mobility and adaptation to Japanese interiors. Their aesthetics stem from this very logic: clean volumes, sturdy joinery, functional fittings, and an emphasis on the inherent beauty of wood.

.

With its generous proportions, the visual quality of its wood and its typical interior layout, this ishō-dansu is a choice piece for a contemporary, classic or wabi interior, where it can serve equally well as a chest of drawers or a piece of character furniture.
