Madeira Wren By Pancrace Bessa, Watercolor Of Bird 19th Century

Roitelet de Madeère by Pancrace Bessa (1772 - 1835 or 1846).
Watercolor on paper signed lower right, first half of the 19th century.
Gold leaf frame and original bubble glass.

Pancrace Bessa served in the Dutch campaign under Charles Pichegru. It was there that his vocation was born; he discovered the beauty of flowers and became interested in the representation of nature through painting. He studied botany and zoology and became a pupil of Gérard van Spaendonck (1746-1822), then of Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), with whom he later collaborated.
He specialized in the art of depicting flowers, fruit and birds. From 1806 to 1831, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon. In 1810, he published his first issue of the Herbier général de l'amateur, for which he was the sole illustrator until 1827.
In 1816, the Duchess of Berry, to whom he gave watercolor lessons, took him under her protection. He collaborated with Redouté and Adèle Richer on the illustration of Michaux's Histoire des arbres forestiers d'Amérique septentrionnale. In 1821, he published a Histoire des Tulipes and, later, a Histoire des Roses. In 1823, he succeeded Henri-Joseph Redouté as painter at the Muséum d'histoire naturelle.
