Portrait Of An Elegant Young Man

Artist: Paul Gomien (1799-1846)

A splendid Romantic-era miniature portrait depicting an elegant young man in a three-quarter view, wearing a tailored black frock coat over a matching vest and cravat. The face is rendered with extraordinary finesse and psychological depth, hallmarks of Paul Gomien’s sublime talent as a portraitist. The mixed-media technique demonstrates consummate mastery: the use of gum arabic lends depth and luster to the dark fabrics, while delicate touches of gouache illuminate the complexion and the finest details, such as the gold ring visible on the left hand. The soft, atmospheric background beautifully sets off the subject. The work is presented in its splendid period frame made of fine wood veneer with a warm patina, topped by its bronze hanging ring.

Biographical Note: Paul Gomien (1799–1846) was an important French portrait painter and miniaturist of the Romantic period. A student of the famous Jean-Baptiste Isabey, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1822 and 1846. Recognized for the precision of his drawing combined with a great softness of chiaroscuro, he achieved considerable success among the aristocracy and the upper middle class of the nineteenth century. The six works are now housed in prestigious public and private collections.
