English Porcelain Coffee Cup Derby Marine Manufacture Late XVIII 18th Century
Porcelain coffee cup from the Derby Manufactory, circa 1795-1800, blue mark with crown, crossed batons and letter D, captioned "an engagement".
The rim of the cup is decorated with a painting depicting a naval battle standing out against a plain green background. The confrontation scene is reminiscent of the work of painter George Robertson, and was inspired by the Anglo-Dutch wars, the fourth and last of which took place between 1780 and 1784.
