Ewe Altar Statues From Togo
Very rare EWE altar statues from TOGO
Man and woman seated facing each other
Middle-hard wood covered with remnants of ancient white, green, red and black pigments
Wear sheen in places caused by repeated handling
The man stands, he has a richly worked headdress with a crusty patina. Could he be a King? Could he be a King?
The faces of both the man and the woman are very realistic
The figures fit together on a pedestal
The seated woman with clasped hands seems to stare piously at the man. Could this be his wife?
I don't know what is represented in the middle, two arcs of circles that could perhaps have served as a support?
Togo was first colonized by the Portuguese, then became a German colony from 1884 onwards
Objects, statues and sculptures are quite rare.
Concerning the set I'm proposing, I haven't found anything equivalent....
