A prolific painter with a deep attachment to his native land, Jean Riboulet-Rebière left his mark on Perigordian artistic life in the XXthcentury. He developed a passion for drawing and color at an early age, painting his first oil at the age of 10. After a spell outside the region, he returned in 1971 to settle permanently in the Dordogne, where he played an active role in the Société des Beaux-Arts (General Secretary for 15 years) and later became President of Art 24, helping to revitalize the local art scene.
His technique is multi-faceted: oil, watercolor, gouache, pencil and pen. This variety testifies to a constant search for different expressions and moods. His landscapes, rural scenes and intimate sketches capture the special light of the Périgord and reflect his sensitive observation of the world around him. It is estimated that he produced over 800 paintings, testifying to his prolific output and unwavering attachment to his territory. He also experimented with abstraction.
Our watercolor dated 1982 depicts the Périgueux canal, located south-southwest of the city on the right bank. This popular spot has been sketched by painters, as here with its vertical, autumnal vision.
