Artist: Berthe Hainaut
Berthe HAINAUT
(Bohain (Aisne) c.1883 - 1976)
A woman from Oléron at her spinning wheel
Pastel
H. 90 cm; W. 73 cm
Signed lower right
Provenance: Private collection, Bordeaux
Despite her recognized talent, Berthe Hainaut left little mark on posterity beyond her works. Her body of work consists mainly of pastels executed with great care, including portraits and landscapes created throughout France.
Our large pastel has been cleaned by a specialist in this medium and reframed in its original frame after being mounted and placed under a closed mat, so that no external dust can come into contact with the work.
The headdress worn here by our woman from the Île d’Oléron at her spinning wheel appears to be a “caline.” This woman wears a red shawl whose edges are embellished with floral motifs.
Framed under anti-glare and UV-protective glass.
