Late 18th Century Brooch Featuring A Miniature Of Jean Duprat (1760-1793), Mayor Of Avignon.

Jean Duprat was one of those men whom the Revolution raised in its drunkenness before shattering them in its fury.

Mayor of Avignon, deputy to the Convention, actor in a time when the altar and the throne were overthrown, he himself participated in the gears that led France to regicide and the government of the Terror.

His end, on the scaffold in 1793, gives his memory an almost exemplary resonance, as if the Revolution, having struck down the King, had turned against his own servants. This work preserves the memory of that tragedy.

Jean Duprat (1760-1793), a native of Avignon, was mayor of the city in 1792 before being elected deputy to the National Convention. Linked to the Girondin group, he took part in the great debates of the French Revolution, in a political context of extreme violence. Arrested after the fall of the Girondins, he was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Tribunal and executed in Paris in 1793.

To date, despite several searches, no certain representation of Jean Duprat has been found in the holdings of the Avignon municipal archives. In the current state of knowledge, this portrait therefore represents one of the very few known iconographic testimonies that can be linked to him.
