Neoclassical Gouache With Circular Temple, Bridge And Sarcophagus, Grand Tour Taste
Neoclassical gouache with circular temple, bridge and sarcophagus, Grand Tour taste
Late 18th – early 19th century
Gouache on paper laid down on board.
46 x 70 cm.
Neoclassical gouache of invention, conceived as a memory of Antiquity. The circular temple inspired by Tivoli, the arched bridge, the mountains and the antiquarian elements — sarcophagus and urn — recall that image of ancient Rome sought and later recomposed by Grand Tour travellers.
In the foreground, a votive procession in classical dress leads animals across the scene, arranged like a frieze.
The composition relates to the tradition of Claude Lorrain, in those landscapes where bridge, temple and figures construct an Antiquity that is suggested rather than described. This pictorial memory is combined with the antiquarian taste of the late 18th century, visible in the details of urn, sarcophagus and architectural fragments, linked to the repertoire spread through the engravings of Giovanni Battista Piranesi and to the culture of the Grand Tour.
The sheet shows some imperfections and scattered stains, consistent with the technique, yet retains a remarkable freshness of colour and a rich abundance of Roman-inspired detail.
