Crucifix In Its Case
Blackened wood cross inlaid with malachite plates, ends adorned with silver-plated metal cabochons finished with radiating foliate decoration.
Christ is silver-plated, behind his head a glorifying silver-plated metal element; it is held in place by screwing, nut visible on the reverse of the cross.
Fixed to the back of the cross are two elements, a disc and a radiating element at the four inner corners of the cross, these elements are probably silver.
A hallmark visible on the disc that I was able to find on a dedicated book, (see detail photos).
Original silver-plated metal suspension ring.
Many small cracks and traces of glue visible on the malachite.
Original box covered with lizard imitation burgundy paper, some retouching and restorations to the edges of reassorted paper, some warping of the box which nevertheless closes correctly.
The exterior of the box features an engraved aluminum cruciform plate on the top as follows:
A LA FAMILLE SALVA Souvenir affectueux du 4 septembre 1880 ROME.
Interior: purplish velvet receiving the cross and red silk under the lid with two stains on the right edge (see detail photos).
Despite the flaws listed, this item remains remarkable for its quality.
Note: the metal has been cleaned and polished by a professional jeweler.
