The Abduction of the Sabines took place during the reign of Romulus. Anxious to expand Rome's population and fighting strength, he welcomed all males into the city, with the result that the city soon found itself short of women. Eager to solve this problem, Romulus invited the neighboring populations to attend the Consualia festivities he had just created in homage to the god Consus.
While the guests turned their attentions to the equestrian games, the Romans seized the Sabines.
This bronze sculpture is a scaled-down version of the large marble by Giambologna (1529-1608), commissioned by Grand Duke Francesco de' Medici and unveiled in 1583. It remains in its original location in Florence's Loggia dei Lanzi.
