Erma Zago, a painter from Verona active between the 19th and 20th centuries, trained at the Brera Academy and gained recognition for her landscape and urban view painting, characterised by a free brushstroke and vivid colouring close to the Lombard Divisionist experience. The Port of Genoa presents a close-up view of the Ligurian harbour, with fishing boats moored in the foreground and the colourful facades of the port buildings rising in the background. The impasto technique, built up through short, layered strokes, dissolves forms and reflections into a chromatic web dominated by ochre, dusty pink and blue, in which the harbour water mirrors the same vibrations as the architectural facades. The composition draws on the tradition of port views in a late Impressionist vein, widely practised in Italy between the 1910s and 1930s.
