Statue Fang Ntumu-gabon
Reliquary figure, Fang-Ntumu, northern Gabon.
Few works of Fang art are as emblematic as this masterpiece from the Ntumu people of northern Gabon. This "eyema byeri" ancestor statue
Today, after such a long journey, we can try to analyze the reasons behind the craze for this work. At first glance, it's the refined, irregular stature of this ancestor, cloaked in a black, oozing patina, that catches the eye. With its exaggerated morphology and length, the figure, seated on a posterior peduncle in its skull box, has a hieratic, disembodied appearance. Certain details, such as the discreet swelling of the abdomen, the rotundity of the thighs and the biconical relief of the calves, nevertheless replace the work in the traditional and characteristic canons of Fang statuary.
Very fine old piece with oozing patina
