Catalan Neo-romanesque School (c. 1930) - The Altar Of Sant Andreu De Sagàs

Oil and tempera on wood panel. Exquisite, impeccable replica of a work dating from around 1200, created by skilled craftsmen using all available techniques.

At around 1900, Catalonia, rediscovering its roots amid rising nationalism, turned to the surrounding Mediterranean reality and to the Carolingian and Romanesque past that gave rise to the first Catalan national identity. This enabled him to create an artistic imagery conducive to the dissemination of his political principles. The valorization of the rich monumental heritage of the early Middle Ages, and the subsequent launch of campaigns to survey, study and restore churches, monasteries and buildings from this period, ushered in a period of neo-Romanesque fervor. This impressive replica of the Sagas Altarpiece, depicting Adam and Eve hesitating to accept the fruit offered by the serpent, is an example of this movement.
