This work by Marguerite Bordet (1909-2014) features a monumental face with closed eyes, emerging from a dense material in warm ochre and brown tones. The almost sculptural treatment of the features, combined with the fusion of the face with a landscape, incorporating architectural elements and inhabited by small human figures, goes beyond the simple portrait to reach a symbolic dimension. Through the gradual erasure of contours in the material, the artist suggests a state of withdrawal from reality, akin to meditation; the face becomes an inner space, a world unto itself, where human presence, memory and silence mingle.
