Medieval seal matrix - Guillaume Echampart France, 14th century - Prestigious provenance

Rare medieval bronze seal matrix, French-made, dating from the 14th century.

Circular in shape (diameter: 28 mm), this matrix features an orle shield in its field, adorned with a frilled band, typical of medieval heraldry. The circumference is engraved with a legend in Gothic capital letters: S GVILLI ECHAMPART, identifying its owner, Guillaume Echampart. The initial "S" can be interpreted as an abbreviation of Sigillum ("seal of") or "Sieur".

The reverse features its original, unperforated gripping device, preserved in a fine state of authenticity.

This die stands out for its remarkable and perfectly documented provenance. It is mentioned as early as the 19th century in Jules Charret's Description des collections de sceaux-matrices de M. E. Dongé (1880), where it appears under number 347 (p. 181). It subsequently belonged to the prestigious collection of Jacques Meurgey de Tupigny (sale on November 15, 1972), then to that of the Comte de R... (sale in 2015).

On its last appearance in the salesroom, this piece was appraised by the Roch de Coligny firm.

A high quality historical item, at the crossroads of sigillography and heraldry, ideal for the discerning collector or lover of medieval objects of impeccable provenance.
