Swedish painter of German origin, often considered the "father of Swedish painting", who arrived in Sweden around 1652 in the retinue of the Swedish marshal Carl Gustav Wrangel, Encouraged by Queen Hedwig Eleonora, who allowed him to study in Italy, after stays at the French and English courts, he returned to Stockholm in 1661, where he was appointed "hovkonterfejare" (court portrait painter), a large number of commissions that he could only fulfill with the help of a large studio. Ennobled in 1674

Leonard J. Wittenberg studied in Tübingen and Heidelberg, where he eventually became rector of that city's university, before enlisting in the Swedish army in 1670 and being promoted to the rank of lieutenant general, Wittenberg died in Riga in 1679.

In good condition, in its original state, old restoration, yellowed varnish, would deserve a good cleaning.
Good quality and very decorative portrait.
