VENICE Watercolor by Umberto Ongania, Venetian painter (1867-1942), in its original frame. Umberto Ongania (1867-1942) was an Italian painter, specializing primarily in vedute (cityscapes) of his native city. Born in Venice, Ongania was the eldest son of the publisher Ferdinando Ongania. He painted in both watercolor and oil. He exhibited in 1887 in Venice, at La Porta della Carta, and then in 1888 in Bologna, at the Palazzo Ducale di Venezia. He continued to paint until the first decades of the 20th century.[1]Ongania was one of the many artists who collaborated on the illustration of a work (edited and published by his father)[2] on the Basilica of Saint Mark, with a text by Camillo Boito[3].
