A beautiful polychrome Christ figure in an exceptional late 18th-century French carved walnut heartwood frame; it is mounted on a dark background of black velvet, and its expressiveness and sobriety inspire respect. The beautiful original polychromy highlights this fine sculpture, and the ornamental frame lends preciousness to this representation of Jesus, which is thereby magnified. The frame is exquisitely carved with bundles of laurel leaves and seeds, tied with ribbons, on a thick cornice rich in detail, demonstrating skillful and virtuosic carving.
