Antique Silver Crucifix, Naples, 19th Century
Crafted in silver, the crucifix features the figure of Christ on a flat cross. At the intersection of the arms is a halo, a symbol of glory and divinity.
At the base is a skull and crossbones, representing Golgotha ("place of the skull") and Christ's victory over death. At the top is a scroll with the inscription INRI.
The upper hook indicates that this is a suspension crucifix (pendant or wall-mounted), although similar models were also used as altar crosses with the addition of a base.
It bears the hallmark of the silversmith Gaetano Pane, one of the most renowned silversmiths active in Naples between the late 18th and early 19th centuries (active approximately 1790–1830). His signature is synonymous with high-quality craftsmanship.
It also bears the silver hallmark of the city of Naples, but it is barely visible.
Condition as shown in the photos.
