Georges Maroniez (1865–1933) – Return from Fishing, oil on canvas, circa 1900

Description:
Georges Maroniez presents us with a vivid maritime scene, evoking the spirit of the Impressionist masters. This Return from Fishing, likely inspired by the coast of Treport, captures the moment when fishing boats return to port, laden with the day’s catch. Golden light bathes the sails, nets, and figures of the fishermen, while the background reveals the familiar outlines of the harbor and its church steeple. The artist employs a refined palette of ochres, bluish-grays, and luminous touches, faithfully rendering the atmosphere—both realistic and poetic—of the French coastline during the Belle Époque.

Our painting, signed lower left by the artist, is housed in a period gilded wood and composition frame, which enhances its timeless elegance.

Biography:
Georges Philibert-Charles Maroniez (1865–1933), a genre and landscape painter, first distinguished himself in 1889 at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he became a sociétaire member. Trained under Virginie Demont-Breton and her husband Adrien Demont, he pursued a multifaceted career, balancing his roles as a magistrate and engineer with his passion for painting.
