Fernand Toussaint (1873-1955/56) Title: Portrait Of A Beauty In A Hat
The Portrait of a Beauty in a Hat was painted around 1900 by Fernand Toussaint (1873-1956), a renowned 19th-century Belgian painter and illustrator.
Born in Brussels in 1873 into an upper-class family, he was encouraged by his parents, who recognized his talent for drawing and helped him develop it fully. At the age of 15, he began his artistic studies with Jean-François Portaels at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and three years later, he went to Paris to continue his training. He was a student of the celebrated Belgian portraitist Alfred Stevens. He specialized in painting portraits of women, still lifes, and cityscapes in the Impressionist, Art Nouveau, and Post-Impressionist styles. His work includes paintings, watercolors, and posters. He is also renowned for his beautiful floral still lifes, interiors, coastal views, and seascapes. In this genre, his paintings are comparable to those of contemporary painters such as Constant Permeke and Adrien Le Mayeur de Merprès, who strongly influenced his style. The Belgian art critic Camille Lemonnier said of Toussaint that he was "one of the painters who broadened the horizon of the peaceful and intimate landscape." From 1895 onward, Toussaint received numerous commissions for advertising posters for various official events. He died in Elsène, a suburb of Brussels.
