SEYSSAUD René (1867-1952)

"Portrait of the painter Léon Colombier"

Oil on cardboard,
Signed upper right,
Titled on the back by the artist: "Portrait of my friend Léon Colombier - Seyssaud"
Cartouche with the artist's name on the frame.

Provenance: Formerly in the Anastay collection, Avignon, then in private collections.

Rare portrait by the painter René Seyssaud depicting his friend Léon Colombier, an Avignon painter.
The painter Léon Colombier, always wearing his hat, is shown playing the flute.
The artist has created a finely detailed composition that can be dated to the beginning of the 20th century when the artist frequented and befriended the painters of the Avignon School.

During this period, the artist painted a portrait of the Avignon painter Jean-Pierre Gras. A student of Pierre Grivolas at the Avignon School of Fine Arts, his career took shape after meeting the painter François Honnorat, an art dealer, who became his patron and art dealer.
He exhibited at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d'Automne, and the Salon des Tuileries. He also exhibited in numerous galleries in France (Galerie Bernheim, etc.) and abroad (Amsterdam, Barcelona, New York, etc.).
A landscape painter, René Seyssaud focused on depicting the landscapes of his region, particularly the Vaucluse, and the local life of its inhabitants.
In 1938, after the death of his wife Louise, René Seyssaud stayed on a farm in Cavaillon.

Dimensions: 31.5 x 24 cm unframed and 51 x 43 cm with its wooden frame.
