Marius Bosc (1940) - The Mad Dance
Oil on panel. Hand-signed. When half-empty bottles litter the club tables, and the swing becomes languid and heavy on the trumpeter's lips, the dance begins, and the intoxicated maenads launch themselves down the slow path of the dance in an explosive sway. Marius Bosc inhabits this liquid border where the rigor of the Old World dissolves into the technicolor of the Pacific. Although his brush inherits the structure of the European figurative avant-gardes—this almost architectural structure, indebted to a post-impressionism unafraid of line—his soul is held hostage by the Californian light. Not the gray and serene light of the Seine, but that raw, electric, and persistent radiance that devours everything on the West Coast.
