Glazed Ceramic Wolf, Foëcy School, Attributed To The Workshop Of Louis Lourioux, Art Deco
Glazed ceramic wolf, École de Foëcy, attributed to the atelier of Louis Lourioux, Art Deco, circa 1930.
An elegant animal sculpture depicting a prowling wolf (or fox), in glazed ceramic in the French Art Deco style from 1925 to 1935.
The elongated and dynamic silhouette, with its supple and balanced modeling, rests on a flat base.
The entire piece is covered with a very nice, nuanced, deep green glaze with mottled effects, contrasting with a sandy beige base.
This piece exhibits all the characteristics of pottery produced in the Foëcy region (Cher department) and can be compared to the work of Louis Lourioux's workshop: stoneware/terracotta paste, thick glaze with drip effects, partially glazed interior with significant glaze build-up, and a hollowed-out base, typical of workshop production or small series.
The modeling, freer and less geometric than contemporary industrial productions (such as Saint-Clément), reflects a more artisanal and expressive approach. There are no visible marks, which is common for this type of regional production.
Condition: good.. A very slight graze approximately 5 mm) should be noted on one corner of the base, as well as some minor rubs to the tips of the ears (both show in the close up photo).. These flaws are discreet and do not detract from the piece's display.
It is a good size (30 cm) and has a decorative presence typical of French animal ceramics from the interwar period. Period: circa 1930
Origin: France, Foëcy region (attributed) Material: glazed ceramic
