The Flemish Tapestry "the Sun King, Bruges Canal" – 150×100 Cm – No. 1648
On a misty morning, near the Bruges canal, Louis XIV's armies prepared for battle. Dew still coated the thick grass, and the silence was broken only by the horses' breath and the clatter of weapons. In the foreground, the king, majestic on his white horse, surveyed the battlefield. His gold-embroidered cloak caught the dawning light, while his hat adorned with red plumes testified to his grandeur. With a firm gesture, he indicated the direction of the attack. Beside him, his officers, dressed in rich scarlet and blue robes, held their spirited mounts. Further along the canal bank, the soldiers were already stirring. Some were building makeshift bridges, others forming tight lines, their pikes raised like a forest of spears. Smoke from the first shots began to rise, mingling with the heavy clouds that blanketed the sky. A rider, slightly behind, turned one last time toward the king. In his eyes, one could read both fear and loyalty. For on that day, in the lands of Flanders, it was not simply a matter of conquering territory, but of adding another victory to the kingdom's glory. When the signal was given, everything changed. The horses charged, the earth trembled beneath their charge, and the shouts of the men drowned out the sound of the wind. Yet, amidst the tumult, the Sun King's figure remained upright and impassive, as if destiny itself were following his will. And so, this scene, frozen in the threads and colors of the tapestry, still today recounts a moment of power, strategy, and grandeur, where history and art converge, never to be forgotten.
