Talking Earthenware Plates
36 antique “speaking plates” in ironstone earthenware, manufactured by HB & Cie – Choisy-le-Roi. These illustrated plates, dating from the late 19th century, depict humorous scenes related to military life and the world of the barracks. Each piece features a figurative decoration accompanied by a caption, characteristic of so-called “speaking plates.”
The set includes various scenes from military life such as: departure, at the barracks, a drama in the barracks, drills in the dormitories, etc. (12 different designs).
It should be noted that for the same scene (see photos “The exercise in the marketplace”), the compositions may vary slightly from one plate to another: the characters and decorative elements may show variations in color, giving each piece a certain individuality within the same theme.
Mark on the reverse: terre de fer HB & Cie – Choisy-le-Roi (Hautin Boulenger & Cie).
Diameter: approximately 20 cm per piece.
The set is in good condition, with beautiful colors and clear, legible decoration. However, just 4 plates show more pronounced patina, with slightly faded tones due to age. Among these, one has a crack visible only on the reverse, not apparent on the decorated front (see the last photograph).
