Jules Léonard (1827–1897), Learning to Read
Signed oil on canvas – 19th century, Belgian school
Oil on canvas depicting an intimate interior scene: a young mother reading to a child seated on her lap, while a little girl standing to the left holds her doll. In the foreground are children’s toys, including a small cart and a ball. This composition is characteristic of Jules Léonard’s genre painting, with its attention to familiar domestic scenes, the gentleness of the expressions, and the rendering of fabrics.
Signed lower right: J. Leonard.
Fine quality of execution. A subdued palette enlivened by lighter touches, delicate modeling of the faces, and careful treatment of the accessories and interior setting. The whole is evocative of the realistic, domestic vein for which the artist is renowned.
Relined canvas. The paint layer is in very good condition. No notable damage to report. On the reverse: ADAM, Montparnasse stamp and Atlantis Gallery, Paris label.
Presented in a substantial gilt wood and stucco frame with fluted decoration and leafy spandrels, in very good condition and with strong decorative presence.

Biography:
Jules Léonard, born in 1827 in Cerfontaine, Belgium, was a 19th-century painter associated with the Belgian and French realist tradition. He distinguished himself in the depiction of everyday life, with close attention to light effects, textures, and detail, giving his works a warm and sensitive presence.
Among his best-known paintings is The Doctor of the Poor, which reflects his interest in human subjects and scenes imbued with truth. Some of his works are held in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Valenciennes, though this alone does not define the artist’s legacy.
His work also circulated beyond France and Belgium, notably in the United Kingdom, where several paintings entered private collections, indicating sustained interest.
Jules Léonard died in 1897 in Valenciennes, France. His work remains appreciated for its sensitivity, painterly mastery, and perceptive view of ordinary life.
His works have appeared 32 times at public auction. The earliest listing recorded by Artprice concerns The Fox-Hunt, offered at Sotheby’s in 1988.
