The Rustic Pharmacy — Gottfried Locher (1735-1795) & Bartholomaüs Hübner (1727-1795) — 1775

The Rustic Pharmacy, or an exact representation of the interior of the room where Michel Schuppach, known as the Mountain Doctor, holds his consultations. This remarkable man has acquired a fame that marks an era in the history of the human mind. He was born in 1707 in Bigle, a village in the Canton of Bern, and was initially only a simple village surgeon. But an unusual acumen for diagnosing illnesses by examining urine, and a number of surprising cures, have attracted an incredible number of patients to him in recent years from almost all parts of Europe, most of them distinguished by birth or fortune. It is above all to his genius and long experience that he owes his rare insights, having never left the vicinity of Langnau, his current residence. His benevolence towards the poor, the frankness of his character, and the originality of his mind further add to the merit of this rustic Hippocrates.
