Japanese Cigarette Case With Egyptian Decoration - Early 20th Century

Japanese Cigarette Case with Egyptian Decoration - Early 20th Century.

A Japanese cigarette case made of damascened metal, crafted using the Nunome Zōgan technique (inlays of gold and silver threads and leaves on a finely textured surface).

The object is attributable to the Meiji period (1868–1912), and likely dates from between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rectangular in shape with rounded corners and slightly domed, the exterior surface features decoration inspired by ancient Egyptian iconography, including anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures, stylized hieroglyphs, and ritual scenes.

The decoration is rendered in contrasting gold and silver metallic tones against a dark background.
The object bears the signature "福" (fuku), meaning happiness, luck, or prosperity.
