Frederick Dielman was a painter and illustrator of German academic training, active in the United States from the late 1870s, where he became a prominent figure in the New York art world and a teacher at the Cooper Union. Best known for portraits and figurative compositions, he also worked extensively as an illustrator for major publications including Harper's Weekly and Scribner's Monthly. The portrait depicts a young woman in traditional dress, wearing a dark bodice with silver frogging, wide-sleeved white shirt, and a red bow at the chest; around her neck a gold and turquoise enamel pendant on a fine chain, and at her ear a floral earring. The figure is set within an illusionistic oval on a neutral background shaded in ochre and pale blue, a compositional device common in bourgeois portraiture of the late nineteenth century. The face is carefully rendered with soft modelling and close attention to the details of dress and jewelry.
