W. Miller (British, late 19th century) - Wooded Landscape with Stream.
92 x 71 cm.
Oil on canvas, unframed.
Signed lower left: "W. Miller".
W. Miller was a British painter active in the second half of the nineteenth century, working within the tradition of the Romantic landscape as established by the English school. The painting depicts a wooded gorge through which a stream flows calmly between moss-covered granite boulders, with the water breaking into a small rapid in the background. The composition recedes in depth along the axis of the watercourse, with the tree masses framing the scene on either side and allowing light to filter through from the open sky above. The palette, dominated by deep browns and greens, is enlivened by luminous reflections on the water surface.
Condition report: Original canvas. Good state of conservation of the painted surface, with traces of old restorations and wear.
