Edmond Tapissier, Military Painting, Portrait Of A Lieutenant Who Died In 1918, A French Infantryman And Aviator.
Artist: Edmond Tapissier
A large oil on canvas, 20F format, signed Edmond Tapissier, depicting a young lieutenant of the 88th Artillery Regiment in a horizon blue uniform. He later transferred to the air force; the insignia of the French Air Force (the winged propeller) is clearly visible on his sleeve. This work is in excellent condition and is being sold unframed. Edmond Tapissier (1861-1939) was a renowned painter, a student of Cabanel and Fernand Cormon. A member of the Société des Artistes Français, he was appointed official painter to the Navy in 1921. His works are held in several national museums. During the First World War, he served as an army painter. It is highly likely that the artist painted this portrait posthumously at the request of the cadet's family, based on a photograph, to honor the memory of their son who fell at Verdun. A moving inscription is visible on the frame: "Lieutenant Henri Picat – Killed in action at Compiègne, June 23, 1918." Dimensions: 73 x 60 cm. Shipping with invoice, fast, careful, and very secure.
